"Anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength." - Christopher Reeves
Ataxic Cerebral Palsy
Ataxic Cerebral Palsy is a condition with no exact cause. There are multiple possibilities. CP is damage to a part of the baby’s brain during pregnancy, during birth, or shortly after birth.("First signs," 2011) Once the damage is done there is no reversing it. With increasing technology and the understanding of CP the therapies are becoming more and more effective.
Ataxic CP is caused by damage to the base of the brain the cerebellum. This part of the brain controls balance and coordination. Because of the damage to this part of the brain these children have a hard time making coordinated movements. Ataxic CP usually affects all four of the child’s limbs and trunk. (www.about-cerebral-palsy.org) To compensate for this unsteadiness the children usually walk with a wide gate or wide stance. Unlike a few other types of CP the ataxic type is known for low muscle tone also known as being hypotonic. Another major problem due to the condition is an intension tremor. This tremor is more promenade during voluntary movements such as reaching.
Ataxic Cerebral Palsy has some characteristics that seem very frightening but with your support as well as all the therapist, doctors, and teachers your child can have an exciting healthy and safe childhood. (www.parentnetworkwny.org)
